Aloqa for the G1 and Android is an interesting push-based location-aware points of interest directory. You basically configure categories on the app that depict your interests (concerts, cafes, restaurants, theatre, etc.) and the app will automatically notify you when something interesting is happening close to your current location. Aloqa is a “fire and forget” app similar to locale, in that once you configure it you can just sit back and let the app do its thing, no need to keep reopening the app itself. You can just work with the notifications.

Notifications are highly configurable and you can setup customized alerts for each category. Unfortunately, you can’t configure based on time of day just yet. This app would integrate wonderfully with Locale – imagine if the app knew not to disturb you while you were at your workplace and held off notifications until you left. There are already a wealth of categories or channels available with the app. Enough to suit all tastes. If you like being pinged about the latest events around your city, this is a fantastic G1 app and can also come in handly while traveling.

Glympse is a social location-aware application on the G1 and Android that lets you share your current location with your friends, and in turn stay up-to-date on your friends’ locations. The really neat thing about this app is that your “glympses” have an time limit (between 5 minutes to 4 hours), which means that your location is visible only for a set period. This can be particularly useful if you are running late and your friends keep calling you asking when you’ll make it. With Glympse, you can just share your location in real-time for as long as you like. The location is layered on top of a Google Maps view.

The time limit gets around any privacy concerns you might have with disclosing your current location. You can send Glympses via email, test message, or tweets. You can pick the list of people you share your location with dynamically – so there’s no need to create a profile, add friends, and that sort of thing. Your Glympses are also fully visible on a regular website browser, so your friends don’t need to be running the app for it to be useful. Overall, this is a very useful application with almost no downsides in terms of privacy concerns – a must-download for those with active social lives and frequent travelers.

Like the recently released Pandora for Android, Spotify is a music streaming service. But it is significantly different compared to Pandora in some important areas. First, it’s not just a smart radio service, it allows you to pick and play from an enormous catalog of songs. Second, it offers offline sync so that you can listen to your music even when you don’t have a cellular or WiFi signal. It’s basically a massive music library right at your fingertips. You will need a Spotify premium subscription to use this application. You can run Spotify in the background on your G1 while you browse the web or run other applications.

Offline syncing is quick and the app clearly shows progress status as the sync is happening. Spotify also syncs with the desktop application – anything you do on the desktop app will be reflected surprisingly quickly on the G1 itself. You can drag songs into the mobile folder on the desktop app to move songs to your smartphone. The interface is very clean and the tabbed player gets out of the way to let you play with other controls even as a song is playing. Playlist management is intuitive and powerful. Overall, this is a great new music streaming app for the G1.

Pandora is finally available for the G1 and Android. This popular music streaming service works by building smart playlists based on the kind of music you like. As expected, this G1 app is slick, functional, and comes with a home screen widget that lets you control and vote without needing to launch the app every time. Needless to say, it works in the background and you can run any number of other apps while the music continues to stream smoothly. Playlists and new smart radio stations are easy to create and train. The thumbs-up and thumbs-down are available at the bottom of the playing track along with other player controls.

Under the menu you can buy and share apps as well as set bookmarks and change settings. You can create a Pandora account from within the app and creating new radio stations is identical to the process on the website – you can search based on the song title, album name, or singer. Pandora can be a little heavy on the battery-life on your G1, so keep an eye on that battery meter as you use this app. You can toggle between a high quality stream and a lower-quality one for slower networks. Both are very good, and only true audiophiles may notice the difference for certain soundtracks. Overall, this is a great app for the G1, and comes after a long wait.

The Better Keyboard G1 app is a custom soft-keyboard for the T-Mobile G1 that offers some significant features that can improve your typing speed and comfort on the G1. This app comes with several flavors of keybaords, including a regular qwerty and a compact version. The regular version of qwerty has a proximity correction algorithm that can correct for near misses based on the other letters of the word you’re going for. This works really well, even when I tried to force an error with ambiguous words. There’s a user dictionary that is prioritized higher than regular words so you can quickly pull up names and other uncommon words.

Swiping left on the keyboard shifts between compact and full qwerty, while swiping left toggles the status of the symbol entry keyboard. There’s also a T9 version that allows you to multi-tap a key to work through the letters. Long pressing the “123?” key takes you to the settings screen for Better Keyboard. The app also integrates with search boxes to do auto-completion, making searches that much faster. There’s a heathy supply of skins on the Android Market for Better Keyboard. Skins range across various colors and can be applied to both the compact and full version qwerty. Better Keyboard is $2.99 on the market, and well worth the price if you prefer a soft-keyboard over the hard one.

Qik is a mobile live video sharing service for the T-Mobile G1 and Android. This app allows you to spontaneously share live video with friends and family. Simply launch the Qik app on your G1 and point and shoot video. The video will appear live on the Qik website, and you can embed and share the video just like you would any other social video. You can also broadcast easily to Justin.tv and other partners. The latency on the video is remarkably low – barely a few seconds at the most. Several thousand users of Qik already exist, resulting in a large number of live mobile video streams on the service at any given time.

Qik allows you configure titles, descriptions, and other parameters before beginning streaming. The interface is simple, intuitive, and discoverable. While the app defaults to sharing your live videos publicly on the Qik website, you can chose to enable a private mode that you can share only with friends and family if you prefer. The streaming video has really low latency as mentioned before, and does not stutter or skip even on relatively busy Wi-Fi channels. This is a one of a kind service that allows you to stream live video from your T-Mobile G1.

NubiNews Reader is a news-reader that comes with pre-optimized formatting for over twenty popular News sources. The list of supported feeds is growing pretty fast with each update to this G1 app. The app presents text and images in a nicely formatted manner and you’ll never have to worry about accurately tapping specific areas to zoom-in because the app makes most of the information feel almost native to the G1. You can chose to subscribe or unsubscribe from any of the supported feeds.

Since the app is customized to the list of News feeds, specific idiosyncrasies of each site are taken into account, and make the reading experience significantly better. For instance, photo albums for certain News sources are presented in a manner that makes browsing them significantly better than in the browser. The app also lets you add your own feeds and comes in multiple languages, English and Chinese being the major ones for now. You cannot sync with Google Reader or any other other major web-based reader at presents, and there’s really no way to share specific items with your network. Apart from these small drawbacks, this a fantastic app for the casual News reader as well as the hardcore News junkie on the T-Mobile G1.

CardioTrainer for Android and the T-Mobile G1 is a fitness application that lets track your running routes, cycling paths, or any other physical activity that involves moving around in the real world (so, no, that treadmill will not work with this app). This app fulfills one of the more fundamental uses a smartphone can be put to – tracking your health goals. In addition to mapping out the routes automatically with the built-in GPS, it also tracks elevation gains and calories burnt. This app also has a voice feature that reads out the relevant statistics, so you don’t need to pause to keep looking it up while running.

The app comes with an associated website. CardioTrainer automatically uploads your training statistics from your T-Mobile G1 to the server so you can see more advanced breakdowns of your activities as well as compare against your histories. There’s a very neat add-on to the app that costs $2.99 that lets you race against yourself to motivate you to improve your times and other metrics. The app itself is free and available on the Android Market now. If sharing your goals helps with your motivation, you can use the facebook app associated with CardioTrainer to share select aspects of your training with your network.

The Sherpa application has a carousal interface that is easy to use and comes in handy when you need to execute multiple actions within the application. Selecting a specific restaurant or other establishment pulls up reviews, ratings, and other relevant information including hours of operation and the address. Mapping and directions are fast and accurate. This app can replace any number of other directory and restaurant applications on your G1. Sherpa is an advanced discovery and recommendation application for the T-Mobile G1.

ICE (In Case of Emergency) is a G1 app that provides useful medical and emergency contact information to first responders, EMS, and hospitals in case you ever need medical attention and are unable to provide it yourself. The app comes with an optional custom lock screen that allows first responders to dial from within the app even when the phone is locked. You can set contact numbers of family, your primary care doctor, and insurance service. The app also allows you to enter your current prescription information, any allergies, insurance card details (including your membership number), and any relevant special instructions.

The custom lock screen is optional, but is pretty unobtrusive and still offers other useful information such as battery status and a clock layered over your existing wallpaper. If you decide to not set this new lock screen as your default, it is recommended that you set the app icon on your home screen for easy access. The app comes with useful notifications and tips so that emergency personnel know what to do once they find your G1. This is one of the better health-related G1 apps, and a great tool for anyone with potentially urgent medical concerns.
