The Better Keyboard G1 app is a custom soft-keyboard for the T-Mobile G1 that offers some significant features that can improve your typing speed and comfort on the G1. This app comes with several flavors of keybaords, including a regular qwerty and a compact version. The regular version of qwerty has a proximity correction algorithm that can correct for near misses based on the other letters of the word you’re going for. This works really well, even when I tried to force an error with ambiguous words. There’s a user dictionary that is prioritized higher than regular words so you can quickly pull up names and other uncommon words.

Swiping left on the keyboard shifts between compact and full qwerty, while swiping left toggles the status of the symbol entry keyboard. There’s also a T9 version that allows you to multi-tap a key to work through the letters. Long pressing the “123?” key takes you to the settings screen for Better Keyboard. The app also integrates with search boxes to do auto-completion, making searches that much faster. There’s a heathy supply of skins on the Android Market for Better Keyboard. Skins range across various colors and can be applied to both the compact and full version qwerty. Better Keyboard is $2.99 on the market, and well worth the price if you prefer a soft-keyboard over the hard one.

The GV app for the G1 and Android is a front-end for the Google Voice service. This app introduces flawless visual voicemail on your G1 in addition to advanced call routing and an astounding amount of customizations and configurations for you to field phone calls just the way you like it. You’ll need a Google Voice account first before installing the app and need to have tied your phone number to your account. You can also setup your voicemail greeting and other settings for your account (such as a do-not-disturb check box)

One other cool thing that Google Voice does is to automatically transcribe your voicemail for you. It doesn’t do a perfect job yet, but it’s good enough. So now your G1 voicemail is searchable too. It may take a while for you to get used to using Google Voice, as it involves a central clearinghouse for all your calls. By using your carriers automatic forwarding service if you don’t answer your phone, plus GV’s “do not disturb” service, you can use GV just for visual voicemail alone.

The aHome G1 application is another excellent home replacement application that allows you to heavily customize your home screen with skins and widgets. There are quite a few themes, font sets, and widgets available on the Market – some free, some costing a nominal amount. The app ships with a few widgets, but these are limited to a few clock and weather widgets. You can also set aHome to enable up to ten screens on your G1. It also supports a dock bar that holds four of your most frequently used app icons that are persistent across screens.

The settings screen brims with customization choices: Empty Screen, Wallpaper Scrolling, Auto Rotate – all of which allow you to really customize the look-and-feel of your G1. Some of the icon choices on the default theme feel a little tacky, but some of the themes are definitely very professional, with clean icons and graphics. This is a great home replacement and customization app with a responsive and active development team behind it that responds pretty quickly to bug fixes and issues.

The Open Home G1 application is one of a number of home screen or “desktop” modification apps for the G1. This is easily one of the better ones, with a clean user interface and translucent controls that get out of your way and let you get things done. It also acts as a launcher for system applications such as the dialer, browser, and maps. It comes with a weather widget which some may find useful, but I personally didn’t like it very much, so I was able to just get rid of it.

It also adds a soft keyboard to the Google search function, but that can be removed if you don’t like it. This application is highly customizable. If you enjoy minimalism in your user interfaces, this is the app for you. It is also highly skinnable, with several skins available on the Market (both free and paid). The Open Home application sells for $3.99 on the Market.

The TTS Translator is a very useful application if you’re traveling overseas and need to translate between various languages. It works in both directions across language pairs. So you can do both English to French as well as French to English translation. It accepts about 150 characters of text input at a time and does a good job of translating all the languages. It also has the capability to do text-to-speech (TTS) if you install the TTS application or service (you’ll need to restart the translator if you do that). However the text-to-speech is mediocre at best. It does better when the translation is to English than the other way around.

Translated messages can be easily sent as a text message or an email with a single click.

A large number of language pairs are available. This app is a must for anyone who travels a lot for business or pleasure. I would suggest using the text-to-speech feature only as a last resort. Otherwise, this little gem can get across the highest of language barriers.

Timeriffic allows you to mute and un-mute the global ringer on your T-Mobile G1 based on the time and day. The default state is setup so that the ringer is turned off between 11:00 PM and 9:00 AM everyday. This happens automatically every night at 11:00 PM and the ringer is turned back on automatically at 9:00 AM every morning. Vibrate mode can be enabled during the time the ringer is off. The actions at the start time and end time are fully customizable and various profiles can be saved for later use based on your preference for both days and the time for each day. So you can configure it to turn the ringer on at 8:00 AM only on Wednesdays instead of the usual 9:00 AM.

This application does with time what Locale does with location. It’s simple, trivial to configure, and once setup you can forget about it.

This is a great little utility that allows you to customize and manage power settings on your T-Mobile G1. It gives you various statistics and information on the battery health. The best feature is the ability to apply profiles that kick-in as the battery level changes. So you can create a profile where you can instruct the app to automatically turn off GPS and reduce the screen brightness when the battery level drops below 25%. It has several options that can be customized, but the main power-hungry features such as the GPS, and Bluetooth, come with pre-installed settings that allow you to get started with minimal tweaking.

Even the triggers are customizable, so you can have almost arbitrary triggers enable a profile. This is particularly useful when you want to use one power-hungry feature (like listening to music) while minimizing usage of other power-hungry features (screen, GPS, etc.) at the same time.

Astro is a functional file and backup manager. It allows easy access to files on the SD card as well as elsewhere on memory. Its most useful functionality, however, is its ability to backup installed applications to your desktop. This will easily allow you to recover from a factory reset (if you ever need one) without going through the market again. To backup an app, launch Astro, select the applications you want to backup from the installed application list and click backup. This downloads the installable “apk” file, which you’ll use to reinstall the application when you want to recover from your backup files.

Applications that you have backed up will appear in a separate list. This app can be used to uninstall applications as well. It’s a straightforward application that does a simple but important task well.

The Nightclock Application is definitely one of my favorites when it comes to an alarm application for the T-Mobile G1. What I love most about this application is it’s striking simplicity – and the fact that you can choose on of the songs on your phone to wake you up as an alarm.

You can choose between standard time and military time – you can change the colors of your clock until you’re satisfied. It’s simple and effective. Set your G1 on it’s side at night and turn off the backlight timer and boom you’ve got a new alarm clock – how clean is that?
