CardioTrainer for Android and the T-Mobile G1 is a fitness application that lets track your running routes, cycling paths, or any other physical activity that involves moving around in the real world (so, no, that treadmill will not work with this app). This app fulfills one of the more fundamental uses a smartphone can be put to – tracking your health goals. In addition to mapping out the routes automatically with the built-in GPS, it also tracks elevation gains and calories burnt. This app also has a voice feature that reads out the relevant statistics, so you don’t need to pause to keep looking it up while running.

The app comes with an associated website. CardioTrainer automatically uploads your training statistics from your T-Mobile G1 to the server so you can see more advanced breakdowns of your activities as well as compare against your histories. There’s a very neat add-on to the app that costs $2.99 that lets you race against yourself to motivate you to improve your times and other metrics. The app itself is free and available on the Android Market now. If sharing your goals helps with your motivation, you can use the facebook app associated with CardioTrainer to share select aspects of your training with your network.

The Google Sky Map G1 app is a cool novelty application that allows you to discover and get detailed information about the night sky. When you point your G1 up at the night sky, the application will show a map of the brightest stars, planets, and constellations in that part of the sky. It works like a charm. The sky map is very detailed and shows most major stars, all the planets (in our solar system that is), and all the major constellations.

The killer feature is the ability to search for a particular celestial object, say a planet, and the application will guide you towards the right part of the sky. You just have to follow an arrow on the screen once you point your G1 up to the sky. The interface is smooth, with no jittering or lags as you sweep your G1 across the night sky. Overall, a nifty novelty app that can come in handy to learn more about the night sky or to entertain youngsters.

This is a fun G1 application that allows you to do an iPhone-like “slide to unlock” the home screen. There are a large number of skins available, but the default is pretty good to start with. It’s very functional, and the home screen shows the time and battery life indicator as well as the slider (with a highlighting effect on the text) at the bottom.

A pretty useless, but cool and functional little application. I personally find it an improvement in aesthetics over the default Android locked state, but it may not be for everyone.

(”Unknown Sources” needs to be enabled on your G1).

TxTSpeed for Android is a little game where the goal is to type as many words as quickly as you can. This is particularly useful for those migrating from a different type of keypad (Blackberry, iPhone) and who want to quickly get comfortable with the G1’s keypad. As you get more and more words right, the game gets progressively harder. It is also pretty addictive as you try and improve your words-per-minute and beat your highest score.

It’s an enjoyable way to improve your texting skills on the T-Mobile G1.

So if you haven’t noticed yet Google has found a way for developers to charge us for our G1 Applications. I’ve even noticed some apps that used to be free the developers removed them from the market and put the exact same application but charge for it now. It is their right to charge for something they created but don’t you think they should at least increase the quality?

Like the Screen Crack application, I may be mistaken but I swear he updated it and it became worse, maybe to coerce people into having to spend the 99 cents to buy the application. 99 cents!! Add ten more cents to that and I’m munching on a Hot N Spicy McChicken or something else off of the dollar menu.

Now, who wants to be a millionaire? Make a great video recording app and sell if for 10 dollars a pop. I’ll buy it and I’m sure anyone else with a G1 will be in a rush to buy it also. We need it – for those late nights with the girl – or maybe just to record a video on 12seconds.tv. All I’m saying, charge us for something that’s worth it. I’m still waiting.

This application is only in Beta in the Android Market right now, but allows users to make local rate calls to any of your Skype contacts no matter where they are. In order to use the service all you need in an Internet connection, you don’t even have to have Wi-Fi or a 3G connection. Skype Beta also allows you send instant messages to your friends.

Basically you will be saving tons on international and long distance calls to mobile phones with this application. If you have not already given it a try, we suggest that you do so soon. Let us know what you think. Since it is in Beta, what do you think can be improved upon in a final version?

As more and more tips come in regarding the T-Mobile G2 it gets harder and harder to sift through and decipher what is true and what is not. So all information as of new should be taken as nothing more than a rumor. Here is what a tipster told The Boy Genius Report.

All of the specs that CellphoneSignal reported are very wrong and the launch date could not be more off. The device is a fully touch handset and as much as we would like, does not have a physical full QWERTY keyboard. Yes there is a trackball at the bottom; they simply could not let it go. The launch of the device has been delayed from late February to April due to uncontrollable software issues.

The T-Mobile G2 will actually be launched on another global carrier with a different name, as T-Mobile G1, G2 and G3 are trademarks of T-mobile. The tipster did not see the G3, yes there apparently is a G3 and it is reportedly coming not long after the G2. We hate to drown you with more rumors, but we felt that we should give you the most reliable rumor out there right now.

It’s a rarity that you’ll see me bashing an application on this site. But this G1 App was absolutely sub-par for me. I was excited to see that the G1 got a visual voicemail application and was hoping it could compete with the iPhone. Yes, it might be in its beta stage but that’s still not an excuse for extreme mediocrity.

Everything was all fine and dandy. I was in school and one of my good friends showed me the G1 Application, and I wanted it so I decided to download it on the spot. Went to their website registered my account and all that stuff. I got the test voicemail pressed the notification on my screen, cool, the voicemail played over speaker phone and I could see who it was from.

When I began missing phonecalls, I would always get a voicemail and never be able to hear it. The application force closed multiple times, and sent me dozens of texts with a garbled message (they say its Google’s fault. So what?) Anyways, once I got fed up I deleted the application. Thought I was done with it. WRONG! It had completely messed up my voicemail system. Everyone who called me though my phone was disconnected. Ridiculous.

I ended up having to call T-Mobile and they instructed me to dial ##004# which does a complete reset on your voicemail. Until this app gets out of beta and they work all the kinks out. I wouldn’t waste my time downloading it.
