Sherpa on the G1

Sherpa is an intelligent discovery and directory application that learns your tastes and preferences as you use your G1. It actively learn your favorite restaurants, cafes, theaters and other locations and allows you to filter and sort based on your preferences. The app is location-aware so you can see recommendations close to your current position. You can actively teach the app your preferences by voting thumbs-up or down on specific establishments. It can also find new establishments and businesses that are similar to the ones you prefer.

The Sherpa application has a carousal interface that is easy to use and comes in handy when you need to execute multiple actions within the application. Selecting a specific restaurant or other establishment pulls up reviews, ratings, and other relevant information including hours of operation and the address. Mapping and directions are fast and accurate. This app can replace any number of other directory and restaurant applications on your G1. Sherpa is an advanced discovery and recommendation application for the T-Mobile G1.

Layar

Now this is the kind of app that’s really going to make waves. Layar is an augmented-reality application for the G1 and Android that displays real-time information on top of reality through the camera on your G1. Just open up the app, point your G1 around and Layar will pull up various bits of information and overlay it on top of the incoming camera image in real-time. The name comes from the ability to select different “layars” – you can pick a “layar” for housing that’ll pull up information regarding rent and prices as you sweep your camera across a row of properties on a street. Other Layars include the ability to see ATMs, bars, hotels, and other cool stuff.

This G1 app shows a little radar at the bottom that allows you to quickly select which direction you want to point your G1 based on the density of interesting spots. You can also dig into each establishment from right within the app. For instance, with rental and properties for sale, you can tap on a specific property and the app will pull up the telephone number, area, and other information relevant to hunting for properties. Layar is available now in the Netherlands and is expected to roll out widely later during the summer. This is one app that really makes owning a G1 worthwhile.

Places Directory

The Places Directory app for the G1 is easily one of the best free applications available on the market now. It’s a great application that figures out all the businesses and places of interest close to your current location. It allows you to browse nearby places within categories such as Restaurants, Banks, ATMs, Hotels, and movie theaters. Needless to say, it makes very good use of the GPS to automatically figure out where you are when you are using the application. It pulls up directions and distances to the locations once you make your choices.

Tapping on a specific business will pull up the address and telephone number. You can dial the number with a single tap. You can also see ratings and reviews from the web. And photos of the establishment by tapping the Gallery button. It also has a mapping feature that uses Google Maps for directions. An excellent application and a must-have for any G1 owner who travels a lot or gets out into the city often.

Moov

Moov is an excellent launcher and all-in-one information retrieval tool for Android. Its most salient feature is its ability to instantly recognize keypad input from the home screen and begin a fast search for almost anything on your G1. You can launch applications, look up contacts, configure global settings, play an mp3, and even bring up websites. All this by simply typing the first few characters of your search from the home screen or from within the Moov app.

The application comes integrated with Google search, Fbook – a Facebook interface, and Quickpedia, Dial Zero (allowing access to a real human behind any major service) and a few other features for quick reference.

Better still, the application learns as you make choices. As you can see in the screenshot above, it begins to automatically understand your intentions based on what you picked previously. This feature should vastly speed up common tasks. In order to have Moov recognize keypad input from the home screen, you’ll have to set it as the default behavior (the earlier G1 default would go through your Contacts list).

Translator for Android

The TTS Translator is a very useful application if you’re traveling overseas and need to translate between various languages. It works in both directions across language pairs. So you can do both English to French as well as French to English translation. It accepts about 150 characters of text input at a time and does a good job of translating all the languages. It also has the capability to do text-to-speech (TTS) if you install the TTS application or service (you’ll need to restart the translator if you do that). However the text-to-speech is mediocre at best. It does better when the translation is to English than the other way around.

Translated messages can be easily sent as a text message or an email with a single click.

A large number of language pairs are available. This app is a must for anyone who travels a lot for business or pleasure. I would suggest using the text-to-speech feature only as a last resort. Otherwise, this little gem can get across the highest of language barriers.
