NubiNews Reader is a news-reader that comes with pre-optimized formatting for over twenty popular News sources. The list of supported feeds is growing pretty fast with each update to this G1 app. The app presents text and images in a nicely formatted manner and you’ll never have to worry about accurately tapping specific areas to zoom-in because the app makes most of the information feel almost native to the G1. You can chose to subscribe or unsubscribe from any of the supported feeds.

Since the app is customized to the list of News feeds, specific idiosyncrasies of each site are taken into account, and make the reading experience significantly better. For instance, photo albums for certain News sources are presented in a manner that makes browsing them significantly better than in the browser. The app also lets you add your own feeds and comes in multiple languages, English and Chinese being the major ones for now. You cannot sync with Google Reader or any other other major web-based reader at presents, and there’s really no way to share specific items with your network. Apart from these small drawbacks, this a fantastic app for the casual News reader as well as the hardcore News junkie on the T-Mobile G1.

Microsoft Microscope on Android and Apple

The “concern” of open-source mobile operating system Android is not far from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s mind. Ramping up investments into a client operating system, Ballmer says the line between a phone and PC operating system is changing.

Windows Mobile currently ranks third, just in front of Apple iPhone with Ballmer seeing Google Android as a “blip on the radar”. Having said this, the concern for Microsoft is that the real market momentum with operators and device manufacturers is swinging toward Android, even if “consumer market mojo is with Apple and to a lesser extent BlackBerry.” Competition is moving across two fronts: Firstly selling software independently from hardware and secondly, selling a combination of software, hardware and services bundled together.

Ballmer said on Tuesday during a midyear update that “the dynamics with Linux is changing somewhat. I assume we’ll see Android-based, Linux-based laptops, in addition to phones, and we’ll see Google more and more as a competitor in the desktop desktop system business than we ever have before.” Microsoft is not discounting any player in the field at the moment, you always need to keep an eye on the little guy…

Skype meets Android

Last week Skype announced their new “thin” Android handset client, Skype lite (beta). The mobile version of Skype is available for over 100 other Java-based handsets including mobile phones for Nokia, Sony Erisson, Motorola and LG.

This application is only in Beta in the Android Market right now, but allows users to make local rate calls to any of your Skype contacts no matter where they are. In order to use the service all you need in an Internet connection, you don’t even have to have Wi-Fi or a 3G connection. Skype Beta also allows you send instant messages to your friends.

Basically you will be saving tons on international and long distance calls to mobile phones with this application. If you have not already given it a try, we suggest that you do so soon. Let us know what you think. Since it is in Beta, what do you think can be improved upon in a final version?

Project Cupcake

Cupcake anyone? Google has done it again. First, they give
us with cherry flavored candy with a sweet but sour after taste. Better known
as the G1, people have noted flaws with the Android hand-set and has led to
Google’s plan to devise another scheme-a revision of the Android Platform code
named “Cupcake.” Project Cupcake is
basically Google’s attempt at eradicating the sour after taste whenever you
have a piece of that Android candy. It includes bug fixes and minor improvements
to improve the android user experience. Here are some of the expected upgrades:

1. The Music Player stops playing when a call comes in and
resumes
after the call is complete. With Cupcake, the music player will slowly
ramp up the volume after the call is completed.

2. The streaming audio interface is more flexible than
InputStream.
You can build an InputStream interface on it, and we will probably
release some sample code for it. Take a look at the AudioTrack and
AudioRecord classes in the git tree:

3. Cupcake provides support for streaming microphone input
to a Java app
and streaming audio from a Java app into the audio mixer.

4. Video Recording.

5. New JavaScript engine in browser.

G1 Sells Over 1 Million, Second handset expected in April

HTC CEO Peter Chou has told Chinese newspaper, the Economic Daily News, that the company expects sales of the G1 handset top 1 million units in 2008.

Chou also went on to comment about HTC’s development plans for future Android handsets and revealed that the company are already developing their third handset.

While there are slightly conflicting rumors circulating that either T-Mobile is going to launch an Android-based G2 handset in January and HTC is planning the worldwide launch of a second Android handset in April, EDN said that HTC is actually developing its third Android-based handset now.

Although little detail was given about their upcoming handsets it is believed that the second Android powered handset should be available by April 2008, with the third handset not far behind.

Android coming to Sprint.

Previously, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse believed that the Android OS was not good enought o run on Sprint phone and network. However he recently has begun to accept the great potential of the Android platform, and has allowed it to run on an up and coming Android-powered Sprint headset. This headset is expected to be released sometime next year.

Statistics also show that the reason for this move was the rapid growth of Googles stocks while Sprint was losing. Is this a desperate move at aggrandizing income? We have yet to see. Comments welcome, we always answer.

The G1 Developers Edition

Google has released a unique version of their T-Mobile G1, as an attempt of providing Android developers with more resources and Dev tools. This version of the G1 is priced at a pricey price tag of $399 and is only available to Android developers. You can simply sign up as a developer and automatically be eligible for this purchase.

The new developer edition G1 is aimed at providing coders and developers with head starts to their work. First off, this version of the T-mobile G1 does not require the T-mobile unlock code, which releases all restrictions on using it with other services. Secondly, it has a boot loader that does not restrict the device to officially signed firmware builds.

Currently available in Japan, Germany, India, France, Taiwan, Australia, Switzerland, Sweden, Canada, Finland, Hungary, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, United States, and the UK.

Seems like a way to get you’re hand on a G1 cheaper afterall. Let us know what you think.

Yes. The long anticipated color variation on the T-Mobile G1 has been confimed, and is on sale in the US now. The white T-Mobile G1 was previously only available in the UK, and has been awaited by many enthusiasts. Yeah, I know what half of you guys are going to do. Sell your black or bronze G1 and buy this one. Also, for all the people who haven’t purchased a G1 because of the absence of this new color scheme, you guys can visit you’re local T-Mobile store and purchase one.
