Like the recently released Pandora for Android, Spotify is a music streaming service. But it is significantly different compared to Pandora in some important areas. First, it’s not just a smart radio service, it allows you to pick and play from an enormous catalog of songs. Second, it offers offline sync so that you can listen to your music even when you don’t have a cellular or WiFi signal. It’s basically a massive music library right at your fingertips. You will need a Spotify premium subscription to use this application. You can run Spotify in the background on your G1 while you browse the web or run other applications.

Offline syncing is quick and the app clearly shows progress status as the sync is happening. Spotify also syncs with the desktop application – anything you do on the desktop app will be reflected surprisingly quickly on the G1 itself. You can drag songs into the mobile folder on the desktop app to move songs to your smartphone. The interface is very clean and the tabbed player gets out of the way to let you play with other controls even as a song is playing. Playlist management is intuitive and powerful. Overall, this is a great new music streaming app for the G1.

Pandora is finally available for the G1 and Android. This popular music streaming service works by building smart playlists based on the kind of music you like. As expected, this G1 app is slick, functional, and comes with a home screen widget that lets you control and vote without needing to launch the app every time. Needless to say, it works in the background and you can run any number of other apps while the music continues to stream smoothly. Playlists and new smart radio stations are easy to create and train. The thumbs-up and thumbs-down are available at the bottom of the playing track along with other player controls.

Under the menu you can buy and share apps as well as set bookmarks and change settings. You can create a Pandora account from within the app and creating new radio stations is identical to the process on the website – you can search based on the song title, album name, or singer. Pandora can be a little heavy on the battery-life on your G1, so keep an eye on that battery meter as you use this app. You can toggle between a high quality stream and a lower-quality one for slower networks. Both are very good, and only true audiophiles may notice the difference for certain soundtracks. Overall, this is a great app for the G1, and comes after a long wait.

The Imeem Android application for your G1 is exclusively focussed on streaming music – so it acts as a radio, much like the Last.FM app reviewed here previously. It doesn’t allow picking individual tracks, but allows picking specific artists and plays various songs by the artist in the background as you do other stuff on your G1. It stores your favorites and ratings, and pulls in many features from the social aspect of the service, such as community favorites.

The streaming music quality is high and there is a pretty large collection to pick from. The application shows small unobtrusive ads that can be closed easily. The Last.FM application reviewed previously does not have ads. All in all a very decent and functional app allowing pretty sophisticated library features. You’ll need an Imeem account to use this, and that can be created from within the application.

Are you a producer? How about a rockstar? This G1 App is definitely for you then. The Tub Thumper Application for the T-Mobile G1 comes with 2 interfaces – one is a drum set, the other an electronic touchpad. Both are touch sensitive so you can play with your fingers. There is one thing this G1 App lacks which is the ability to press two instruments at the same time like (drums and hi-hat). You can’t blame this on HTC or Google though because Apple has patented multi-touch (ugh!). This G1 app could use a recorder though so that you can record some of your beats as you go.

This is definitely a fun on-the-go/show-off-to-your friends app. Hopefully we’ll see more G1 Apps like this in the future.

With every new handset eventually there will be questions about streaming content from a source other than what is provided. One question I always manage to come across on forums is, “Can we use Orb on this phone?” The short answer is yes.

Over at Orb forums this question was brought up, and coincidentally a member of the Orb team made a comment on the situation. The users asked if there was ever going to be an Android Orb application in the Android Market, the answer being yes, there will be a way to use Orb services on Android-powered handsets this week. He even went on to say that there would eventually be a native application that will improve the use of Orb on Android. There has been no official press release about any of this so we do not know of any release date yet.

For those of you who do not yet know what Orb is, Orb has developed an award winning service that combines the use of an internet media portal and a proprietary software application. Orb leverages the best in already available technology (hi-speed broadband, Wi-Fi, wireless internet access and sophisticated portable devices) to provide a brand new way for people to connect with their digital media in the manner “how, when and where” they most desire. In short, Orb provides the ability to “MyCast”. MyCasting gives the user instant access to photos, music, videos, live television, and other digital content on their home PC at anytime and from any internet-connected device, such as a mobile phone, PDA or laptop. MyCasting is media anywhere.

Orb is based on an elegant, robust and scalable architecture and is the first of its kind to allow consumers mobile access to all of their digital media. Orb’s software architecture leverages the best features of today’s popular standards while abiding by current digital rights management solutions. The Orb embedded Solution is a set of software platform capabilities which the consumer electronics device manufacturer can port and integrate in its devices to differentiate its connected product lines, and build media and services management applications, rapidly, efficiently.

The Digital Audio Control Protocol (DACP) was recently introduced by Apple, and is built into all recent iTunes™ versions. DACP is the protocol used by the Remote app on the iPhone/iPod Touch to remote control your desktop or laptop iTunes player.
DACP is similar to the well-known DAAP, using Bonjour MDNS to find libraries, then using HTTP requests with binary responses to transfer data. After a few days in front of packet dumps, I have most of DACP decoded.
With the protocol now reverse engineered, Jeffery Sharkey wrote an Android client in about a week. Now you can remote control your iTunes from your new Android phone when it arrives later this year. This works out of the box without installing any extra software on your PC or Mac.

About TuneWiki

TuneWiki plays audio and video while displaying synchronized lyrics or translated lyrics. It allows for a music based Social Network where users share music information with friends and can sync and translate lyrics directly from their phone. TuneWiki displays music maps that show songs playing in the same GPS location and can navigate the map to any other location in the world to see what’s playing there. It also creates music charts that shows top songs in GPS location, or of any country or state. TuneWiki allows connectivity to Open-Social where users can share what they are playing in real time and allow friends to send feedback to the handset.

The music and video playback abilities for content found on the phone storage and Android’s “Always on” internet connected platform empowered a creation of a virtual library. The music and video can be local or “in the cloud” and play normally, it can be part of any play-list or ad-hoc, played from maps, charts, or recommendation.
